Board of Deacons

The Board of Deacons is made up of twelve members, with four elected each year to serve three year terms. An individual may serve no more than six consecutive years. An equal number of men and women are sought for the Board, although the by-laws do allow for as many as eight of the same gender. Church membership is required of those serving as Deacons.


Responsibilities:

1. Monthly Meetings

2. Board elects Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, and Liaisons to Board of Ushers, Reception and Flower Committees annually.

3. Develop Budget proposal for the coming year to be submitted to the Finance Board by June 30.

4. Prepare elements and assist pastor in services of Holy Communion.

5. Assist pastor in services of Baptism.

6. Assist with special worship services, including Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Easter, All Saints Day, and the Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service.

7. Assist in planning Lenten Programs, and other programs throughout the year to foster communication among members of the church and between church and members.

8. Host reception for high school graduating class.

9. Maintain active participation with Confirmation Class, and host reception on Confirmation Sunday.

10. Be involved with the care of the sick, and shut-in, including regular visits, Easter and Christmas flower distribution, serving communion as appropriate, sending cards to sick and bereaved members and friends.

11. Offer bereavement support, for example, attendance at calling hours, funerals or memorial services.

12. Appoint Pastoral Visitor(s) each year.

13. Review the Church membership Roll annually, moving members to the Active and Inactive rolls as appropriate.

14. Oversee the Charles E. Backus Society for those who have been members of our church for fifty years or more.

15. Oversee the Deacons' Relief Fund with the pastor.

16. Submit an Annual Report of the Board's activities for review at the annual meeting each year.

17. Authorize payment of bills.

18. Receive prior approval from Finance Board, before spending funds from Major Maintenance Account.

19. Submit an Annual Report of the Board's Activities for review at the Annual Meeting each year.
